Intercrime |
Transmission not yet located |
(1) The channel ran
The Avengers in tandem
with TWW up to the end of 1962, but then switched to Fridays,
independent of all other regions. They rejoined the TWW schedule for
the last three episodes. Teledu Cymru failed to transmit one
episode of Series 2, Intercrime. The reason for its pre-emption
is unknown.
(2)
Episode title unconfirmed; transmission confirmed in the Daily
Telegraph.
(3) School for Traitors was
recorded in studio on the evening of Saturday 9th February 1963, with
the VTR session for The White Dwarf being held exactly a week
later. Both recording sessions were only a couple of hours in advance
of the transmissions in ABC Midlands and other regions. However,
newspaper listings show that Teledu Cymru scheduled each episode for
the Friday night prior to their recording. Therefore, these two
transmission dates must be taken as wholly unreliable, and it is
unclear whether or not these two episodes were shown at all on the
Welsh channel.
Furthermore, The Avengers
Declassified has a theory that rather than being the first region
to show episodes following their production, instead Teledu Cymru were
actually bringing up the rear. By this we mean that the otherwise
skipped Intercrime replaced Immortal Clay and all the
episodes moved back by one week. This would mean one episode was not
shown (or was screened in a slot we've not found) but at least it
would make School for Traitors and The White Dwarf
screenable by Teledu Cymru. Evidence, alas, is not currently
available.

After Teledu Cymru failed
financially, partly due to transmitting infrastructure delays beyond
their control and Granada Television's decision to cease producing
Welsh language content for the channel, it was bought out by
Television Wales and West (TWW). From Monday 27th January 1964, TWW
controlled both regions, while retaining the Teledu Cymru name. While
separate schedules ran in the two ITV regions, the new Teledu Cymru
programming mostly followed that of the TWW region, with the
occasional English-language programme replaced with Welsh-language
content. Consequently, the schedules in Wales were occasionally
disrupted by opt-outs to accommodate local programming.

(4) In the 1968 ITV Franchise changes,
Television Wales & West and Teledu Cymru (TWW) lost their
franchises and were replaced by
Harlech Television. Feeling that the decision had been arrived at
unjustly, and that their staff were not being treated fairly, both TWW
companies ceased broadcasting on Sunday
3rd March 1968, two months before the end of their respective franchises. Interim
emergency services 'Independent Television Service for Wales & West' and
'Independent Television Service Teledu Cymru' were hastily set up and
broadcast March-May 1968, staffed by former TWW employees. Harlech Television commenced broadcasting on
Monday 20th May 1968. Episodes
from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station onwards
were aired by this new company — more than a year after most of these
episodes had aired in other ITV regions.
Researched and compiled by Simon Coward, Alan Hayes,
Andrew Pixley
and John Tomlinson
