You know you're listening to a
Springbok Radio programme by the distinctive voices of the
announcers
that can be heard at the top and tail of each episode...
"Now... from the Makers of Cold
Water Omo..."
There are three versions of this
pre-recorded announcement heard in the surviving episodes. The first
two were spoken by Denis Smith, while the other was recorded by
Malcolm Gooding. You can play these introductions by clicking on the
bowlers and then see how each variant was used in the serials.
"The Avengers..."
This is the title of the series,
spoken over the theme music. In all instances, this was the voice of
Tony Jay, the original adaptor of scripts and director of the
programmes.

"John Steed and Emma Peel — The
Avengers..." and
"Listen every evening, Monday to Friday, to John Steed and Emma Peel
—
The Avengers... Brought to you by the makers of Cold Water Omo..."
These daily announcements were
spoken over the theme music, either by Denis Smith or Malcolm Gooding,
with the first at the start of the programme and the second at the
end. Both these announcements were delivered by the same announcer,
except in the case of Escape in Time, which is dealt with
separately in the table.
"The Avengers — Donald Monat as
John Steed and Diane Appleby as Emma Peel — is adapted and directed by
Denis Folbigge and produced by David Gooden..."
This announcement was usually heard
just once a week, ordinarily at the end of the Friday night
transmission. This announcement, which would of course have credited
Tony Jay rather than Denis Folbigge in this instance, did not feature
on The Fantasy Game, the only surviving serial from Jay's time
on the series. Instead, an announcement for a different series was
heard on the fourth (*) of the seven episodes. The table below notes
which announcer was heard in the story and the episode in which the
announcement appeared.
