 The New Avengers — Series 1 & 2

In common with several other ITV regions, Westward Television's repeat run of The New Avengers did not pay great heed to the delineation of Series 1 and 2, with episodes from both runs featuring in a seemingly random order. We present the repeat run here as it unfolded. Episodes are marked • (1) or •• (2), dependent upon which series they were originally a part of.

(2) According to Western Daily Press, an unidentified episode of The New Avengers was expected to be a last-minute replacement for the Yorkshire Television special Bill Maynard in Person. This programme was widely expected not to be transmitted as Yorkshire had been off the air since before Christmas 1978 and therefore other regions scheduled potential replacements: for instance, You’re Never Too Old (ATV), The Streets of San Francisco (Granada), Ol' Redhead is Back, a Bette Midler special (STV) and The New Avengers (Westward). However, Yorkshire Television did indeed come back on air at 5.45pm on Wednesday 3rd January 1979. A BBC viewing barometer report reveals that Bill Maynard in Person was indeed shown on the channel and was taken, despite their backup schedules, by ATV, Granada and possibly others. STV kept to their replacement choice, Ol' Redhead is Back, and rescheduled the Maynard special for Friday 26th January 1979. The BBC document lists only the larger ITV regions and therefore not Westward, but Westward did not reschedule the Maynard special. This suggests that they also took the Yorkshire transmission and did not need to resort to their New Avengers backup plan.

(6)

(3) This transmission of The Gladiators appears to be the first repeat of the episode on Westward Television. However, there is some confusion over the first run showing in 1978 and a possibility that it was replaced with Hostage on that occasion. If that was indeed the case then this supposed repeat screening on Wednesday 15th October 1980 actually marked its debut in the region!
(4) Replaced with The Reagan / Carter Debate and subsequently rescheduled for Wednesday 5th November 1980.
(5) Due to the previous week's pre-emption, this episode replaced the scheduled Complex.
(6) Westward Television lost its right to broadcast in the 1982 ITV franchise changes, closing down forever at midnight on Thursday 31st December 1981. It was immediately replaced by new franchise holder TSW (Television South West). The repeat run of The New Avengers continued, unaffected.
