(2) It seems likely that
Channel joined Westward Television in this transmission - as it did
for all other episodes in this run - but the listings in The Times
(suggesting that Channel followed ATV between 10.32 and 11.55pm,
taking University Challenge and Treasures of the British
Museum) and The Guardian (stating an 83-minute slot for
half-hour show University Challenge between 10.32 and 11.55pm)
cast some doubt over the transmission of The Avengers on this
night.

The New Avengers —
Series 1 & 2
In common with several other ITV
regions, Channel Television's repeat run of The New Avengers
did not pay great heed to the delineation of Series 1 and 2, with
episodes from both runs featuring in a seemingly random order. We
present the repeat run here as it unfolded. Episodes are marked • (1) or •• (2), dependent upon which series they were originally a
part of.

The New Avengers —
Series 1 & 2
This short, emergency run of repeats took
place during the 11-week period of industrial action across the ITV
network which blanked television screens in 14 of the 15 ITV regions
- Channel Television being the only franchise holder that continued
broadcasting throughout the dispute. However, this meant that they
were dependent upon programmes to hand as nothing was being produced
by the other regions. A programme like The New Avengers was
ideal as it was pre-existing and was provided by a production
company independent of the regional franchises.

(3) This transmission of The
Gladiators appears to be the first repeat of the episode on
Channel Television. However, there is some confusion over the first
run showing in 1978 and a possibility that it was replaced with
Hostage on that occasion. If that was indeed the case then this
supposed repeat screening on Wednesday 15th October 1980 actually
marked its debut in the region!
(4) Newspapers disagree over the actual broadcast times.

The New Avengers — Series 1
& 2
From the start of 1986, it appears
that Channel now received its ITV feed from TVS rather than from TSW
(and formerly, Westward). Consequently, variations from the network,
other than those originated by Channel, now followed TVS's
programming rather than TSW's. In 1986, this meant that Channel
didn't carry many episodes of The New Avengers because TSW
had yet to start their repeat run and TVS had nearly finished
theirs.

The New Avengers — Series 1
& 2
It would appear that ITV
franchise operators were either offered or only chose to purchase a
package of 20 episodes of The New Avengers for this repeat
run. The following episodes appear not to have been included in the
package: House of Cards, Cat Amongst the Pigeons, Dirtier by the
Dozen, Dead Men Are Dangerous, Medium Rare and
Obsession.

but not reflected in listings in the Daily Telegraph, so may or
may not have gone ahead.
(6) Synopsis in newspapers was "Steed is given a warning".
By process of elimination, this is thought to have been Sleeper.
(7) Billed but replaced by overnight War in the Gulf ITN
programming (11.50pm-6.00am).
(8) Episode likely but not confirmed: newspaper synopsis was "Purdey's
kidnapped", which suggests Hostage but could apply to other
episodes.
