 The Avengers — Series 4

(1) Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (Second German Television), usually shortened to ZDF, is a German public service TV broadcaster based in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. It is run as an independent non-profit institution, which was founded in 1961 by all federal states of Germany (Bundesländer). ZDF is financed by television licence fees and advertising revenues.

(4) This was the first episode to break the fortnightly pattern, being aired a week after the previous one. It was also the last German dubbed Series 4 episode of the original batch and the wait for the next 'new' German-dubbed Series 4 episode would be lengthy - in excess of thirty years!

(6) Avengers episodes were generally transmitted in a bi-weekly schedule. All episodes were shown with dubbed German soundtracks.

 The New Avengers — Series 1 (Part 1)

(8) The transmission of The New Avengers in West Germany would, remarkably, not be completed until after its reunification with East Germany in 1990. The initial 1978 transmissions by public service broadcaster ARD were sporadic, with episodes airing approximately a month apart, and ended a mere six episodes into Series 1. The local Bavarian channel Bayern 3 took up the challenge six years later, showing the remainder of Series 1 with the exception of the Nazi-themed The Eagle's Nest. The full series was finally transmitted in 1991 by TELE 5, a satellite and cable channel.
(9) All prints shown in 1978 featured German language soundtracks and were edited heavily by ARD — each episode ran approximately 8 minutes short compared to their UK versions.

(11) The Tale of the Big Why was scheduled for Thursday 27th July 1978 by ARD, but no episode was actually transmitted.

 The New Avengers — Series 1

(12) Bayern 3 inherited the German transmission masters of The New Avengers from ARD which meant that they remained heavily cut as before. Again, the transmissions featured German language dubbed soundtracks.

(15) There is some confusion as to the running order on TELE 5 of these last two episodes.

(16) SAT.1 was the first privately owned television broadcasting station in Germany, having started in January 1984, one day before RTL. It opened as PKS (Programmgesellschaft für Kabel- und Satellitenrundfunk), initially a joint venture of various publishing houses, and was renamed SAT.1 in January 1985.
(17) These five episodes were shown for the first time in Germany within a daily re-run of the whole series. Approximately five minutes of footage was cut from each of these newly-dubbed episodes.

 The Avengers — Series 6

(19) Invasion of the Earthmen was newly-dubbed in German (along with five Series 5 episodes) and shown by SAT.1 as part of a daily re-run of The Avengers in 1993.

 The Avengers — Series 4

(20) A Surfeit of H2O, A Touch of Brimstone, The Girl from Auntie and How to Succeed... at Murder had been dubbed already in the early 1970s with different voice actors, alternative episode titles and only to be purchased on 8mm film. Today only a few copies of these 8mm reels are known to still exist. For television, a new dub was made in 1996.
(21) There was not a break in the run of Avengers episodes during the SAT.1 transmissions - it just appears to have been the case from the data we have to hand. That is because that data lists only first screenings of episodes.

 The Avengers — Series 6

(22) These episodes featured German soundtracks newly created in 1996. They had debuted on the German Pay-TV channel DF1 prior to the Free-TV premieres on SAT.1. These Avengers episodes were shown on SAT.1 as opening salvos in a long run of double-headers with other classic television series.

 The Avengers — Series 4

(24) The Murder Market was the final Series 4 episode to be dubbed into German, a task at last undertaken in 2001 and premiered on a local TV station in Berlin. On Kabel 1, it was the opening episode of the first complete run of the entire series (Series 4-6) on German Free-TV, shown every Sunday morning at around 9.00am.

 The Avengers — Series 1

(25) Only two Series 1 episodes have been transmitted in Germany, The Frighteners and Girl on the Trapeze, both of which debuted on the ARTE channel in 2010. These transmissions were simultaneous with the broadcast of the same episodes in France, but the German broadcasts carried newly-recorded German language soundtracks.
